Apple fumbles - Market share remains with Microsoft

Just a quick update from "Michael's Minute", the Linspire Newsletter:

My disappointment was captured by an Apple spokesman who commented on what the switch does not mean: "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac." Future "Mactel" computers will have specially designated Intel chips, not generic x86 compatible chips found in common PCs. My sources say that Jobs is going to use Intel's cryptographic technology called LaGrande to make sure OS X will only boot on Apple-branded hardware. This is a similar technique to the one that Microsoft used to make sure Linux could not be loaded on Xbox...

The bottom line is that PC buyers will unfortunately not have the option to install and experience OS X. There will be no low-cost laptops from budget-minded Taiwanese manufacturers. There will be no generic AMD or Via white boxes sold by the millions capable of running OS X. Apple will not be reaching the 95% of the world buying Intel-compatible machines.

I knew it was too good to be true. The only plus side is that it probably means that eventually all that will be left (outside of specialized hardware) is the good old 86 line and it's descendants. One day...

At its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) today, Apple announced plans to begin delivering models of its Macintosh computers using Intel microprocessors by June 2006, and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007. Wow. Finally, standardization. And now, the MacOS/Windows war begins. It's all about the better OS at this point. I will be happy to see the proprietary Macintosh hardware world die. No more silliness. Everyone just fights it out on the same battleground, and everything is a million times more compatible and transferable. What a relief. I thought it would never end.

Uses for and how to create a Cat 5 Crossover Cable (GTO Rig Ed. Method)

Uses for a crossover cable really only number 2. The first one is the most common use, which is to extend a hub to another hub, or router. If your hub or router doesn't have a special port which can be switched from normal to crossover or can't automatically determine if ports need to be crossed, then you need a crossover cable. The 2nd use is more fun. You can create a quick and dirty two computer network using one of these babies. Just plug your computers network cards into each other. No hubs, routers, or anything. Set your IP addresses and masks to match each other (for example: IP 192.168.0.1 SUBNET 255.255.255.0 and IP 192.168.0.2 and SUBNET 255.255.255.0) and you're ready. You could also just install the netbeui/netbios/ipx protocols which require no configuration if you just want to browse to each other. Many games also support those protocols, and on the fly LAN (local area network) gaming is the fun part of this setup. You can even download some free network games off the internet to play with a buddy. If you want more than two players, you'll have to get back to the hub/switch/etc. deal though. In an earlier post I mentioned GTA2 which is available free from Rockstar games, the people who make it. It offers a network play mode which is fun and easy. Go grab it!

And now how to make one. This is definitely the simple, dirty way to "get 'er done". Take a standard Cat 5 Cable (the regular old network cable you see everywhere with the plug that looks like a phone plug but is too big to fit in a phone jack) and cut off the outer sheath from about 4-5 inches of the center of the cable. You should end up looking at 8 pairs of wires. Your mission: cut the orange/orange-white pair and the green/green-white pair and then remove an inch off the ned of the wires' insulation. Twist the green with the orange and the green-white with the orange-white and tape the resulting connections with electrical tape. Tape each connection seperately. Then tape up the whole mess you made so that it kind of looks like a normal cable again. That's it! You're ready to go! Here's an illustration which might help you understand what's going on - if you already get it, don't mess with the drawing, it may just confuse the whole issue for you. Enjoy!

Have you ever had one of those days (or moments) when you think you are SO cool and everyone wants to be you? Well yesterday I took my little dog out for a walk to the mailboxes. I passed every person that lives in this apartment complex with me. I talked to all of them, in fact. They all remarked on how cute my dog is and talked about what a nice day it was and all that fun stuff. I started feeling pretty good about myself. I have a cute dog, I have nice neighbors, and they all like me.
Well, I got back to my apartment and sat down with the mail that I collected in my lap so I could read it. ( * I finally got another freebie - Dove styling samples! * ) As I looked down to read the mail in my lap I noticed that the zipper of my jeans was down. Not just down part of the way...ALL THE WAY DOWN. And it had been down the whole time I was chatting with my neighbors and thinking I was so cool.

In honor of secretaries around the US, here is a little something you can put together to help you organize your desk. It holds pencils, stpales, paper clips, popcorn, and many other small items. Just grab a sheet of paper and I'll explain what to do. Use this image as your reference:

1. Fold paper in half at the dots
2. Do it again
3. Fold and unfold all of the dotted lines then unfold back to where you were after your first fold. 4. The creases in your paper should look something like this at this point.
4. So I mis-numbered - bite me. Fold at the dotted lines. The top lines (red) are only folded on side of the sheet facing you. Then fold the top flap down.
5. You should have something like this at this point. Pull outward from the center crease.
6. You should end up with this.
7. Pinch fold the dotted lines.
8. Now you should have this. Only straighter, and less surrealistic. Tuck in the flaps you made into where the arrow is pointing to. Do this on both sides.
9. Tada! Go you. You rock. You made a box.

Origami is good for the soul. Except tree souls. It really pisses them off.

I found this and thought it was appropriate to share. Charlie the monkey has a nasty habit - he is a smoker. Apparantly he learned to smoke by watching people who came to visit him at his zoo. Now, if you toss in a lit cigarette, Charlie will puff away. The zoo officials are asking people to please stop contributing to Charlie's habit by not throwing in cigarettes anymore. I personally feel that Charlie would make a great spokesmonkey for the tobacco companies. Maybe instead of the Marlboro Man, we could have the Marlboro Monkey. Or, in the case of Camel cigarettes, we could have Charlie the Monkey on the camel's back. The possibilities are endless.

Cleaning a pool

What? You got something better to talk about? Ok, then. Here's what you (may) have to do to clean your pool when it's turned a nasty, slimy, green color and is full of crap.

The first thing of course has got to be the filter. If the filter is not running, then you don't have squat; just fill the pool up with dirt and plant daisies.

If the filter simply won't run. Call a professional. You don't really want to mess with the electrical problems that could be going on. If your filter runs, make sure you clean out the inside of it. Cut it back on and add DE (special dirt) to your skimmer basket if you have a DE filter. Empty the skimmer basket while you're at it. You don't have to clean the inside of your filter more than a couple of times a year. Make sure that you are supposed to open that thing up though before you do it.

The chemicals you need are chlorine tablets (with a dispenser (floating thing)), shock (basically powdered chlorine), algicide, and clarifyer.

Make sure your floater/chlorine dispenser is full of chlorine tablets (or little balls, or whatever kind of chlorine your floater takes), and the shock you just throw in around the pool (open the bag and shake it out evenly around the pool water). A couple of bags should be good enough for the average pool. Clarifyer is blue stuff that helps clump together small particles in your water so that your filter can catch them. The thicker the blue stuff the better. Algicide is great stuff for green pools. The ultimate stuff is the kind that has copper or some such in it. They sell it at Home Depot for $20-$25, but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere. Great stuff.

To get the leaves and junk out of your pool, use a net and a leaf master. It doesn't actually have to be leaf master brand, but if you look up leaf master you should find the basic thing I'm talking about. It's a big round disk with a big net on top and it hooks up to your water hose. This thing picks up leaves by the pail full.

Once you clear out the garbage and the pool is turning a brighter shade, hook up your pool vacuum and start sweeping the bottom with it. An inline debris cannister is a good idea here otherwise you rely on your filter catching everything and your pipes not getting clogged in the process. It happenned to me and it took months to get everything fixed again.

After all is said and done all you should really need is to keep your floater full of chlorine and use your net once in a while. A crawling cleaning machine helps a lot here too. If you want perfect water, get out a test kit or better yet take a sample of water to a pool store (if you have a Leslie's, they're free, and good). Most of them will test your water for you and tell you what to add.

Going AWOL

I was actually introduced to the idea of "going AWOL" last week when Jeff "G-Free" Kinnamon was talking about the new machine.

For those of you that have never heard of AWOL, it stands for "Alcohol With Out Liquid". That's right alcoholics, no more getting full on beer or alcohol! All you have to do is breathe in the alcohol vapors through the machine's tube to get a buzz. Another added plus is that you no longer have to worry about hangovers.

The company has added a built-in safety device that restricts the pace of the alcohol being vaporized. It takes about 20 minutes to complete one vapor shot which is the equivalent of 1/2 a regular shot. It's only a matter of time before that is modified.

Lawmakers in Missouri and Illinois are trying to quickly ban these machines from being used in clubs and bars. Just think about it, why do people stop drinking? One reason...they get the full feeling. Without the feeling of being full, people would, in this case, inhale and abuse these machines causing high blood-alcohol levels and possible alcohol poisoning.

One of the innovative features of the model is the car's sensory system, which gathers biometric data from the driver. The driver's pulse is measured by a biometric Polar watch and a "Mobile Eye" records the person's driving behavior. The information is analyzed by an HP onboard computer. Senso then uses colors, music and fragrances to bring the driver to an attentive, positive state of mind. The seats contain electric motors that vibrate in case the driver is diagnosed as sleepy.

Wei Mingtang, 55, a factory worker from Guilin city, Guangxi province, discovered his ears leaked air over 30 years ago reports Nanguo Morning News.

"Hollywood movie studios have settled a copyright lawsuit against a website operator they say had helped people find pirated copies of films for download.

Edward Webber, who ran the site, agreed to pay a "substantial" fine to settle the lawsuit and agreed to turn over copies of his computer server logs and data, the Motion Picture Association of America said Thursday.

Those records might prove to be even more valuable to the trade group as a way to ferret out individual computer users who had visited the site, which had more than 750,000 registered users downloading thousands of files, said John Malcolm, head of the MPAA's antipiracy division.

The MPAA also took over the LokiTorrent.com domain name and posted a warning against trading movie files on-line with the slogan "You can click, but you can't hide."

The settlement is the first announced by the MPAA following an unspecified number of lawsuits filed by Hollywood studios in December against operators of more than 100 computer servers in the United States and Europe.

The MPAA also announced a second round of litigation against U.S. sites that host indexes for BitTorrent, eDonkey and DirectConnect and against individual computer users, but Malcolm declined to identify who the defendants are or how many."

That's right, a Miller Beer employee in Racine, Wisconsin was fired because he was caught drinking a Bud Light.

At the local Mardi Gras in Racine, several people were asked by a local newspaper to pose for a picture. The problem was that the Miller employee was pictured with a Bud Light in his hand.

The day the pictures were printed in the newspaper, the employee was told, "You're in trouble for drinking Bud Light." The boss then proceeded to fire the employee stating that he was no longer needed at the company.

The employee's handbook was searched front to back and in no part does the handbook tell the employees what they can or cannot drink.

The employee is currently supporting two young sons and is on the job hunt. It seems as though the firing has made him smarter, "I was actually thinking I was going to go apply at Anheuser-Busch."

So, the next time you decide to participate in Miller Time, remember that (1) they are no longer an "American brewing company" as they claim (now owned and partially operated in London) and (2) fire their employees for drinking a better beer.

MMmm. Tasty software freebie day. Always a nice buffet. Here's a few free beauties that give you entertainment and freeware-lovin goodness all in one (not necessarily "freeware", but all free):

Stepmania - DDR Simulator extraordinaire. Turn your PC into a $5,000 Dance Dance Revolution machine simply by downloading this free software. PSX dance pads can be converted to work with a PC using a simple(moderately) homemade adapter or a commercial one. Those Pads can be bought on ebay for $15 a piece easy. As far as music goes, plenty of sites offer mixes via torrents. Look around.

Mame - Not really for the faint of heart when it comes to computer garbledy-gook, but definitely worth the trouble. Mame is an arcade - yup, actual arcade like where you used to throw away your money - machine emulator. Find those old favorites that you used to play and go at it again. There are even various graphical interfaces available that make the experience a bit less daunting to the uninitiated. Look around for mame roms to play. I'm sure you'll find some. Or maybe you won't. Of course, at that point you should probably stick to "The Oregon Trail" or "Number Munchers" anyway. Don't get malaria!

First off, since everyone is talking about movies today, I have to add my 2 cents to the "movies to watch" list. That amounts to:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire! coming november 18th.

Ok, so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally started watching the Harry Potter series. I had my reservations at first, but the movies are a feel-good adventure ride that you just can't put down. They weren't made to be profund, just fun. I believe they succeeded. So next year, the movie to watch is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Moving on from that happy little blurb, we come back to reality where things like this exist...

I searched and searched this morning for something good to post about. I needed something funny, but with a little bit of an edge.

As I was researching this certainly doomed movie, I came across a sign of hope...the coolest website ever.

I turn your attention to http://www.nationallampoon.com. A website to go when you need a laugh or in some people's cases, a "hot" anime chick. Not only can you play quarters with Manny, I mean Taj from Van Wilder, but you can also have it out with Frat Daddy Dick and even Van Wilder himself. The website is also educational for the young-uns with the infamous Topless Tutors. Finally, a must-have for all successful websites, a game in which you can kill Bin Laden time and time again.

This morning, I counted on being able to bitch and complain about National Lampoon and their poor attempt at making a movie about lawn bowling. I mean sure, it has Vince Vaughn in it, so how bad could it really be? Let me remind you people, it's about lawn bowling...how interesting could it get? But instead of my normal bashing, I'd like to praise National Lampoon for having such a great website. A calming place that adults can go to have a good laugh and where kids can go to catch a glimpse at a nice set of hoots (props to Dirty Sanchez).

And when it comes down to the secret recipe for cooking up a great website, those are your two best and main ingredients.

5. Star Wars: Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith - May 19; You gotta watch this cuz you've seen the others and even if Samuel L Jackson is wrongly cast. When it comes out, go watch it and enjoy it. Just don't be like this dork:

Honestly the real question is: black history month in Sri Lanka?

Have we actually managed to hitch our minority group placebos to yet another countries wagon? The sad truth is that the most powerful minority group in the U.S. has used its massive political influence AND its minority boo-hooing together as a tool to grab this chunk of the year for itself, without any regard to where that shows them to be in the socially oppressive ladder. No longer can it be claimed that the overbearing white community pressures the citizenship into racist programs that promote the caucasian; that type of act is now taboo... for whites. For the minority, feel free to flaunt your ethnicity, that is of course assuming that you are a major minority. Hispanics? Some authority - here's a week. Asians? Maybe a day here or there. Indians, american or otherwise, need not apply. Arabs? Sorry. Anything else you can come up with is pretty much in the dust. Equality of race requires equality in standing, but don't hold your breath waiting for white history month. It's just not gonna happen until whites are the major minority... or maybe if we meet a whole bunch of green aliens...

Playstation 3 will be a mini Supercomputer (debut date May 05):

"Uploaders to eDonkey.com, Bit Torrent and other file-sharing networks beware: The commercial equivalent to Big Brother is watching you."

"EDonkey and Bit Torrent are two of the most popular file sharing networks and use a technique called swarming that allows users to download slices of a file, according to BayTSP. These slices could come from a pirated movie or software application.

The swarming technique lets multiple users access the files for download simultaneously. As users download a file, they also share the portions they've already received.
FirstSource monitors for the first uploads of a client's intellectual property to the eDonkey and Bit Torrent networks. When the system spots a file name matching the client's content, it initiates a download to confirm that the file is what it appears to be.

Once the content is validated, the FirstSource system captures the Internet Protocol address and identifying information of other users downloading and sharing the pirated material.
The system also logs which portions of the file that each user shares. This data is stored in an infringement database as evidence in the event the client decides to pursue litigation against the file sharers. "
